The town of Stavelot, located in the municipality of the same name, contains several memorials that commemorate the First and Second World Wars. They are located on the small square in the town.

In December 1944 the town of Stavelot saw heavy fighting with the German offensive in the Ardennes. Following strong resistance from US troops, on 18 December elements of Kampfgruppe Peiper, of the German 1st SS ‘leibstandarte Adolf Hitler’ Panzer Division, advanced along Rue du Chatelet, through the town.

Today, within the small square several memorials remember the US Army and Air Force units who fought during the winter of 1944 to 45 in the Ardennes Offensive.

One of the memorials remembers the impact on the local civilian communities, with the names of children who were killed during the battles around the Stavelot area.

In Stavelot, 133 civilians were killed, some murdered by the SS forces who passed through here in December 1944.
