The memorial above the town of La Roche-en-Ardennes remembers the 54 men of the British 51st Highland Division who were killed during the Ardennes Offensive in January 1945.

In December 1944, British units moved up to the western banks of the River Meuse. They held the western bank of the river Meuse during the period of Hitlers last offensive in the Ardennes, which took place throughout the winter of 1944 to 45.

Once deployed into battle in early January, the British units were tasked with pushing back the German units in the Ardennes region. They would then join up with the US 84th ‘Railsplitters’ Infantry Division.

On 11 January 1945 at 06:00, the 1st Black Watch, a battalion of the British 51st Highland Division, moved through the roadblocks and liberated the town of La Roch-en-Ardenne.

The men who lost their lives here in the winter of 1944 to 45 are remembered on the dedicated memorial to the 51st Highland Division, located on the hillside at La Roche-en-Ardenne.

The plaque reads:

‘Dedicated to the memory of the fallen of the 51st Highland Division who gave their lives for freedom in the La Roche Offensive of January 1945’
